Needs & Priorities

Phase 1 Overview

The Needs Assessment & Prioritization phase of the project is complete and included:

  • Evaluating safety, mobility, access, and infrastructure condition needs
  • Dividing the corridor into Focus Areas that share related needs
  • Prioritizing the Focus Areas in each Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) region
  • Collecting public and stakeholder feedback through an online survey, special interest meetings and an online public forum.
Explore the Focus Areas in more detail below.

Focus Areas

Focus areas are defined as locations with consistent needs that could be addressed by improvement projects or initiatives. Twelve Focus Areas along I-81 were identified during Phase 1. Each Focus Area was evaluated based on needs related to safety, mobility (congestion), condition of pavement and bridges and access as it relates to existing and planned land use.

The prioritized Focus Areas in each Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) are highlighted in orange. Learn more about the needs identified and feedback provided by selecting the Focus Area maps below.
